Tuesday~Round 2 / Orientation Training

As some of you know we drove to Chicago Monday night and stayed at Steve's Aunt and Uncles house so we didn't have to drive so far this morning. It worked out very well and it was so nice to be with them to start this part of the journey. Aunt Mary Jane sent some cookies and fruit with us this morning and it turned out to be a real treat. I'm sure Chicago is a very nice city but the best thing I like about it is the Byerwalters!

This morning I got a little nervous when they took Steve into surgery to put in a different central line and take out the old one. They told me they would come and get me in an hour…after two and a half hours I asked them how he was, they told me to have a seat and they would call me when it was time. I guess they had trouble getting the old central line out; it had formed scare tissue around it. Anyway, they finally came and got me and said he could get dressed and walk to the cafeteria to eat and then wait until his room was ready. While we were walking to the cafĂ©’ he said that area was hurting and opened his shirt to find he was bleeding badly under the tape and gauze, we turned right around to go back but it started dripping and bleeding through his shirt so the cleaning lady on the elevator tore open her bag of clean towels and gave him one to hold against his heart to stop the bleeding. We went right back to the area we had just left and they hurried over to tend to him. He was feeling woozy and they got him in a bed and worked to stop the bleeding. It was a little unnerving for me because the blood was coming out right at his heart. I guess this was our introduction what they call the “intensification” portion of the treatment. It felt pretty intense to me and we've only just begun.

After that he got a room and then they did a bone marrow test and EKG on his heart. Chemo started about 7pm and will go for four days. He is sleeping now and I am headed that way myself. I have a roll away cot in his room so I get to be with him, poor guy just can't seem to shake me.

I'm so glad we walk by faith not by sight (or feelings). The scriptures say the Lord is near to those who call upon His name and I speed dialed Him all daylong today so I know He was real close.

Goodnight from University of Chicago Medical Center,
Dawn

  2. When I read this post, the first word that came to my mind was "Elohim". I thought that interesting because upon looking the word up to really see what it's meaning was, I realized that it is so perfect. It is used in Genesis referring to God, the Creator, and has a meaning of "Strong One". The Creator of our bodies is also the one who gives us the strength we need to deal with these bodies. Aren't we joyful for that strength that He gives us when we need it most. Bless His name!
