Thursday~Test Results

Thought I (Dawn) would share with all of you the results of today's doctor visit which was real good.  Overall Dr. Larson was very pleased with what he saw from the tests.  The bone marrow biopsy showed engraftment and mild cellular activity in the marrow which shows regeneration, the cells are still immature yet but that is to be expected.  There was no evidence of residual primary myelofibrosis (and I presume no leukemia) in the sample they took but did say that fibrosis usually resolves slowly overtime.  His blood tests today showed a lower white cell count but they thought that was typical of new cell regeneration and he still has not needed any transfusions.  So that is the results of the bone marrow and blood tests however, Steve did develop a rash a few days ago and has been dealing with some bi-lateral neuropathy (random numb areas with periodic stabbing pain).  In regards to the rash, they did a skin biopsy today to see if it is Graft verses Host Disease (GvHD) or a reaction to one of the medications he is on.  They adjusted a few medicines, prescribed some topical ointment, and will call when the results are back.  He has a few stitches from the biopsy in his stomach that will come out next week.  The neuropathy seemed a little more puzzling but Dr. Larson is waiting to see if changing some medicines and time will resolve that issue.  At approximately four months Steve will start immunizations since his cells are brand new like a babies and he will need to build up his immune system.  For now the next appointment is January 6 so until then we keep on keepin' on.

With the New Year just a day away all of us I'm sure are reflecting on the past year and of course what lies ahead.  I would not have ever imagined our past year being what it was and when I look back I have to say sometimes I still feel a bit of shock.  Steve said today, "There is nothing like an illness to humble you" but I have never seen him anything but graciously giving encouragment to others along the way, especially me.  Every aspect of our lives has changed that's for sure but what is important in life, our faith, family, and friendships are strong and we thank the grace of our Lord for that and each one of you.  I leave with the following verse and Irish proverb that I enjoyed and thought you might too.

"Praise be to the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ! In his great mercy he has given us new birth into a living hope through the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead."    1 Peter 1:3

May you always have work for your hands to do.
May your pockets hold always a coin or two.
May the sun shine bright on your windowpane.
May the rainbow be certain to follow each rain.
May the hand of a friend always be near you.
And may God fill your heart with gladness to cheer you.

May God's abundant goodness grace you all in the New Year,
Dawn and Steve

  1. Good day dear friends,
I thought a lot about the two of you throughout the day yesterday, praying for great results with the doctor's visit. I reflected on the peace of God which passeth all understanding to all of us; family, friends, and every caregiver along the way, keeping our hearts and minds through Christ Jesus, and the greatness of believing His Word. We receive because we believe...and the believing temperature is hot Steve & Dawn...like I ever doubted that! How encouraging to read your good news!!! Believing scales the peaks of life, climbs the highest mountains without fear. Healing is not dependent on who you are, but whether or not you believe.
I look forward in bringing in the New Year, with great believing in every situation. Let's find the promise of God... believe...and receive.
